The Rainbow Tunnel
Step into the Rainbow Tunnel and experience a kaleidoscope of color! The JMZ’s newest admission-free exhibit is open to the public, inspiring joy for the entire community. As you enter the tunnel, visitors are surrounded by mirrored panels reflecting the full visible spectrum of the rainbow. The tunnel’s graduated design, which is narrow at the entrance and widens toward the exit, encourages exploration of sound, perspective, and spatial perception, creating an immersive learning experience.
The design and construction of the Rainbow Tunnel was fully funded by the Friends. Created as a welcoming community feature, it reflects our mission to expand access to hands-on science learning for visitors of all ages and to ensure these experiences remain accessible.
We would like to express our gratitude for Edward Whelan and Brian Weinstein as the designers of the Rainbow Tunnel and Gizmo Art Productions as the fabricator and installer.
Dinosaur Garden Capital Campaign
The Friends raised $300K for the California Dinosaur Garden, a new exhibit that opened in October 2023, the California Dinosaur Garden is an immersive experience of the Cretaceous period in California. The garden features prehistoric plants within a seasonal marsh landscape, life-size dinosaurs, prehistoric animal sculptures, and interactive interpretive exhibits, including a fossil dig. Exhibits are fully inclusive, including wheelchair access to the fossil dig, braille labels, and tactile, sensory-rich elements for children of all abilities.
